The A-frame 2X4 Christmas tree we made for 2017 was designed to come apart and fold for easy storage. With the exception of the concrete base, the tree came apart and easily stored as expected. Because of the weight and size of the base, we knew we didn’t want to try to store it, but wanted a way to use it throughout the year making storage unnecessary.

We designed a PVC (plumbing pipe) stand that utilizes the base to serve as a garden flag holder! People, at least in the south, enjoy displaying and changing out garden flags to match the season. Although the base is heavy, it’s not so heavy that it can’t be moved around to where you want it. You could even pop it into the car and reassemble it at your next tailgate and hang your team colors from it!
Take a look at the video for a quick tutorial of the project. Basics steps are below but additional information can be found at our website.
Gather all your supplies. You'll need PVC pipe and a few fittings as well as the cement base from our 2x4 Christmas tree tutorial.
Hold the pipes in place to determine the height of the longest pipe. Ours was 4 feet with a smaller section of 8 or so inches for the top. Mark and cut the smaller 1/2" pipe to length as well. A standard garden flag is 12 wide so we cut our pipe a little long than 12".
If you don't paint the stand, you'll need to remove the markings from the pipes. The easiest way is with a sander and 220 grit sandpaper. We like the Diablo brand SandNet. Be sure the pipes and fittings are clean and free of dirt and grease.
We spray painted all our parts with hammered black spray paint. The concrete base was coated with a clear poly. We didn't do this before as it was used indoors. We felt it needed a little protection from the elements since we were now going to use it outside.
Assemble the parts. We used PVC glue to glue the tallest pipe into the bottom adapter. This adapter is what screws into the concrete base. nothing else was glued into place.
We put a 1" diameter wood dowel down into the longest pipe to help give it stability. The dowel is 4 feet long.
After putting all the pipes into place, add the garden flag and then the remaining pipe cap.
We also made a quick chalkboard sign from MDF and key rings to hold it in place.
Here's the stand with the flag in place. The flags can be changed out throughout the year seasonally, for special occasions and more!
