Do you know you're spending way too much on simple floor mop pads? You can make a bunch of them out of one single old towel! Let me show you how I keep making them - easy and basically zero cost, while going green, too!
Time for a new quick and easy, no-fail beginner sewing project you can make really fast: the best DIY floor mop pads you'll ever make! It's an easy, step by step tutorial with lots of photos - a great beginner sewing project!
This is what you'll need for the project:
- a towel (the thicker the better)
- a piece of oilcloth or other strong, densely knit, no-stretch material
- sewing machine, thread, scissors
- pins
- an existing (fitting!) mop pad with side pockets for easy measuring
Fold an old towel so you'll get two layers, then place an existing mop pad half an inch away from the fold. Then cut around the 'modelling pad', leaving a 1/2 seam allowance all around it. You'll get a nice rectangle. Don't cut the folded edge.
Then, you'll have to add the side flaps - visit the tutorial to check out the dimensions required - it will be easier than just eyeballing your old mop pad.
A few stitches later, you'll see this: an old towel turned into a brand new mop pad. I even like my diy version more than the purchased one!
Basically, it's just a few seams and you get to this diy mop pad. It's a totally easy and quick project. Once you make one, you'll stop buying them altogether!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Could you also sew on velcro strips so you don't have to bother with the side flaps?
Could you make this with stitch witchery or other iron-on product for a no-sew application? I gave away my sewing machine many years ago and no longer have one.
