About a month ago we welcomed a new puppy to our family. Now that Roxy has joined us we're realizing how many toys our pups have acquired. Since I still had leftover crates from my sister-in-law I thought I could easily convert one into a toy bin. But I didn't want just any kind of toy bin. I wanted something that was going to be multi-functional, hence the Crate Storage with Extra Seating or Ottoman Option. The whole thing was easy to put together and I already had the majority of the items on hand. I used a curtain panel for the fabric since it was cheaper than purchasing the same fabric at a store and I could make multiples from one panel. Cutting the slats out are optional. My favorite part is that since the top is removable I can use it as seat when playing on the floor with the dogs.

Supplies:
18” x 12” Wooden crate; well supported
Reciprocating saw
Sandpaper
Paint or stain
Paint brush
¼” x 18” x 12” piece of Plywood
Foam or pillow form
Curtain panel
Scissors
Staple gun
I used the reciprocating saw and cut the middle two slats out, so they’re flush with the corner supports. Then I sanded off any chips in wood or sharp areas. I painted the crate using a sampler Valspar paint and primer in one.

While the paint was drying I lid out the wood top with the foam on the bottom. I cut the foam so it was slightly larger than the wood itself. I used recycled box padding that came inside a food delivery box since that’s what I had on hand.
I laid the curtain panel as flat as possible with the design side facing down. After placing the cut foam on the panel, I then placed the plywood piece on top of the foam. Finally, I cut the fabric around the edges of the wood leaving a 3 - 4 inch border.
Using the staple gun, I stapled the fabric to the plywood pulling tightly, so that the foam wouldn’t move. I then continued until I had attached the fabric securely.
Finally, I placed the top on the crate. Here Roxy is modeling that it can also double as a bed.
I added some vinyl stickers and now it's pawfect! The great thing about this crate is that you could omit cutting the slats and just use it for storage in a bedroom, kid's room, or living room.
