One of my favorite things to do is make tie blankets. I assumed that everyone that wanted to make one had probably done so already.. but.. what if they hadn't? What If they didn't know about tie blankets, and the wonderful fuzzy-ness of them!? What if they had no idea they could make something so wonderful and easy?? So, I decided to share, you know, Just in case... we simply cannot have people not knowing about such loveliness!

You can make these in any size but the most common size is 60" X 72". This is because Fleece (the main ingredient) is mostly 60" wide and two yards of it is 72". That leaves the actual blanket 50" X 62" with 5" fringe all around. Just the right throw size! Fleece does not fray so NO Sewing involved! Yay. They also wash up with ease and last for years (just ask me when I got my first one, go ahead ask... still one of my favorites).

These are quick and very easy to make, and they make awesome gifts!

They are available as "kits" at the big box stores, but honestly any fleece will do. Pick out a fleece with a nice pattern you like, and a coordinating solid color for the back (or go crazy with two patterns , whatever you like!).

I suggest a place where you can do this on either a really big table, or on the floor. You get a better fit if you can lay it flat out.

LET'S GET STARTED!icon icon icon

With WRONG sides together (remember you are not going to sew it, and you are not going to have to turn it when done. It should be the pattern you want to see facing you), lay the two pieces together on a flat surface. If needed trim either or both pieces so that they are even all the way around. A lot of material has a 'salvage' edge , so trim that off.
Once you have them together and laying flat, the next step is to cut your corners. This should be a 5" X 5" square (for this size blanket). What I do is cut a piece of cardboard to that size and lay it on the material cut around it. You can see one of the corners here. Do that to all 4 corners.
After you have cut out all 4 corners, it's time to start making your strips. Now, this is where I do it a bit different. They say to cut approx. 1" strips (by 5" of course, but who's really measuring?? :) . Initially I cut a tad bit bigger than one inch, THEN I cut that strip in half. It is 'easier' for me to approximate 1" than it is 1/2" apparently. It just works better for me. So I cut the whole side at 1" (or there abouts. I DO NOT measure, no one is going to take a ruler to your gorgeous, warm and fuzzy blanket, trust me!) and then I go back , cut the strip in half and begin tying knots. Tie one strip from the front to one strip from the bottom, easy, peasy.
Here is a photo showing the ties after cutting the strip in half and tying knots. I just like the tighter , cleaner look of the smaller knots. If you are into a chunkier look, by all means skip this step and just tie the one inch strips together. I've done it both ways and both ways work.
On the long sides I choose to tie every 5 or so a different way so that sometimes the back color showed and sometimes the front color shows. Tie however you want, it all works! : )
Other side fringe.
Finished blanket!!
Annnnnddddd here it is!! All done. This can seriously be done in a few hours... on a yucky rainy day.. when there is nothing to do.. icon
The thing that takes the longest is cutting all the strips, the rest is cake.
Things you'll need:
1. Fleece- 2 pieces @ 2yrds each, any patterned color, and a coordinating solid color
2. Scissors (sharp ones)
3. Your Hands icon

Have fun, these are addicting (much like my pillow addiction!). Happy blanket making!

Love, love, love it!!! Especially the pattern. I have made two of these blankets, and you are right, they are so cozy. I really love the 1/2 in. strips. I think I will try that next.

Thank you for this project, waiting for a rainy day!😊
