Many years ago, I found a plain wood coat rack with several hooks, at a yard sale. It was inexpensive and perfect for the wall by the back door and the entrance to the laundry room. I needed the rack to hold multiple items the kids would bring in from school (backpacks), ball practice (bat/ball bags) and playing outside (B.B. guns) plus coats and jackets. I asked hubby to attached the rack to the wall so it would stay. He did exactly as I asked. He used extra long screws and drilled them into the rack and the wall. It was not going anywhere without leaving huge holes to be repaired and a useless rack. Well, as I stated this was many years ago and we no longer use the rack as we once did. I recently decided to paint the old wood rack and give her a new look and update the wall she hangs on.
The well loved and used wood coat rack in her old form.
This was what I began with, pretty plain, right? I thought hmmm, if I am going to paint the rack, I also need to decorate the wall around her.
I began by using painters tape to outline the rack so I would not get paint on the wall.
Next, I cleaned the dust from the wood rack and the metal hooks. I also lightly sanded over the wood before painting.
I used Apple Barrel Paint because it was all I had available. I applied the paint with a sponge brush.
I have to admit, I thought I could take the easy way out and just paint around the hooks. After more than half way of the first coat, I knew I needed to remove the hooks for the best look. I was going for shabby, but not sloppy...lol.
I used a handheld, battery operated drill to remove the hooks.
The first coat was applied. So much easier to paint without the hooks.
Once the paint dried, I used sandpaper to shabby the rack for the look I wanted.
Painter’s Tape was removed. I love this stuff!
I began to add the hooks back on the rack. I did not do anything to them but give them a good cleaning.
All finished!
Wall and rack before....
....wall and rack after
I plan on camouflaging the hot water heater soon. It is an eye sore in my laundry room. I am also working on updating the entire laundry room to go along with my new wall. I already had most of the decor. The red “forget me not” picture hanging above the rack was a thrift find. I did repaint it and add detail work to make it pop. The clothes pin bag is actually one I have used for years when I had an outside clothes line. I made the laundry sign, will share in another post. The large yellow pin and the clothes pin picture were purchased at Cracker Barrel for half off.
