A Crammed Closet Gets a Stunning Makeover in Just Three Hours!

This family lost almost everything in Hurricane Harvey, and after months of waiting, they finally had a new place to call home.

In the rush of moving into the new house, the guest room had become the dumping ground for all the things that didn't have a home. And now, instead of enjoying a fresh start, my client was faced with the overwhelm of a crammed closet.

That's where I came in.

During our initial consultation, the homeowner shared that she wanted the space to be a functional and pretty guest room for her in-laws and grandkids. She also wanted to reserve some storage space in the closet for linens and a few of her project supplies.

The transformation that followed is stunning!
In order to make the most of our three-hour session, the client emptied the contents of the closet onto the bed before my arrival. She couldn't believe all of these items were actually stuffed inside her closet.

Clearing the space is a very vital and powerful first step. It allows you to see your belongings more objectively and begin emotionally detaching from them. You also get to see the potential of your newly empty space.

All of these factors help simplify the sorting and purging process.
Together, we began sorting the items on the bed into one of four categories:
  1. Donate
  2. Trash
  3. Keep
  4. Return

We ended up filling two or three bags of trash and four boxes of donations.
At the bottom of the pile were some very special blankets that survived the storm; some of them so well-loved by the grandchildren they'd been worn to bare threads.
Those blankets needed to be stored to easily grab in the middle of the night. A metal hamper the homeowner already had turned out the be the perfect solution.
The pride my client took in her home was so evident as she told me about her belongings and the plans she has for them. The wrought iron piece will eventually hang over the closet door. And, the t.v. mount will be put to good use when the guest room television is mounted. A large art piece was stored safely inside a box until my client figured out where to hang it.
We took advantage of the hanging space to store table linens, and we tucked off-season comforters and bedding into the corner behind the table runner. That way they are easily accessible, but out of the way while they aren't in use.
The black basket is storing bath towels for another family member who will be moving out soon. The decorative box holds precious family photos and the striped basket is for holding in-progress projects.

The vase and lamp have a temporary home on the shelf until the room is decorated.
Three hours and $25 later, we were stunned by how spacious the closet felt!

It has plenty of room for guests to hang clothes and put luggage, as well as for storing crafts and linens. Not only that, this lovely guest room is ready for tucking grandkids into bed under warm, snuggly blankets at night.

I can't think of a better way for this deserving family to enjoy their new home.
