One of the areas that has remained unfinished in my condo, is the basement staircase. While the basement remains unfinished, a LOT goes on down there. It is my workshop, storage AND my freezer is down there. So, I make several trips a day (and more at times) up and down the staircase.
The unfinished staircase has been an annoyance to say the least.
Thank you Hometalk for the staircase challenge.
This is what I am starting with. A completely blank slate, and the opportunity to experiment. I did not take a pic of my materials, but they are simple enough, two colors of paint and a wallpaper border. So here we go...
I started by painting the stringer the same color of the wall a very pale seafoam green. You may notice that I am using more of a craft brush, which I felt gave me the most control especially where the stringer meets the tread.
Next, and this is where the experimenting came in, I painted the treads a flat black. I think it will give a great contrast and not show the dirt that comes from an unfinished basement floor.
Originally, I was going to paint and stencil the risers; but after painting the stringer and the treads I realized that my back was NOT up for that challenge, so I visited my local wallpaper store and found this really nice border paper, which was almost the exact height of the risers. It was on clearance and it was prepasted. OK how could I not go for it. I took a deep breath and went for it!
I am really, really happy with the end result. Down the line, I will probably put a finish on the stair treads (black) just to make them more durable; but I am pleased with the look.

I love the look of this, but was wondering if the wallpaper gets torn and scuffed if your shoes hit it while walking up the stairs?

I have structurally sound unfinished pine basement stairs. The builders used large flat top nails, visible on the treads. Is there any pretreatment I can do to hide the mail heads so I can copy your great stair painting project?
