Vintage Sewing Box Makeover

When I saw this cute vintage sewing box in a charity shop (thrift store) I fell in love with its design, particularly the legs. I am not a naturally tidy person, spending most of my time amidst creative clutter! This gorgeous sewing box seemed perfect as a side table but also for storing whatever crochet/knitting project is on the go.

The living room is decorated with a soft purple accent wall with gentle grey walls. We like the colour scheme and plan to keep it, with a fresh lick of paint when time allows. So my decision about paint colours for the sewing box was easy. Several tones of grey – this makes it an easy piece to blend in anywhere. I have used chalk paint and relined with fabric on the inside
Good preparation is key. The sewing box was sanded thoroughly all over, although chalk paint will adhere to varnish this was loose and flaky.
I carefully removed the old lining from the sewing box prior to painting and saved it as a template for creating the new lining.
Painting the greys onto the box I allowed each area to fully dry before painting a different section with a different colour. To achieve as flat a result as I could I varied the direction of my brush strokes for the second coat and sanded with fine sandpaper.
The fabric lining acted a template for creating the new lining - for more detailed instruction check my blog post here.

The project took time and patience but I am delighted with the result. If in future I prefer the original dark wood appearance I can sand back.
