Making this coastal wreath was easy and the best part for me was that I didn’t need to buy anything new for it. All of the items were in my craft stash or in my box of items that I know I want to repurpose. That made it a very budget friendly project.
This MFD initial is one that I've used for another wreath, but it was looking a little weather worn. I gave it a fresh coat of white spray paint, thinking I would leave it white. But, it didn't really have the look I was going for.
After I began putting the wreath together, I decided it needed to be a different color. I painted over the white with Folk Art Coral enamel paint. I added a coat of Minwax Protective Spray Finish before continuing.
The capiz shell is glued to the outer border of the R and the starfish is glued on top of it. A small piece of twine is tied into a bow and glued onto the starfish. I used E6000 glue since this is going to be outdoors. Hot Glue doesn’t hold very well in changing temperatures or rain.
I wanted to give the wreath more dimension and I did that by adding a grapevine wreath behind the R. This is an old one that I had in my craft stash. I spray painted it using Krylon ColorMaster in bright white. I didn’t want it to have full coverage, just enough to give it a worn look with a color similar to drift wood.
To attach the R to the grapevine wreath, I used twine. It’s wrapped around several times and then tied off into a knot on the back. I repeated this step for the opposite side of the wreath.
I added in some sea glass shards that I had left over from another project. These are glued in place using E6000 Glue.
To give the wood more of an aged look, I used a paper towel to dab on some brown craft paint in small spots around the R wreath. I wiped it off quickly so that the coral paint would look a little aged, but not brown.
I love that all of the elements of this coastal wreath were items I had on hand. Creating a new decor piece for zero new dollars is always a good thing! Take a look around your craft stash or give an older item a second life for budget friendly decor pieces.
Even if you purchased the items, this wreath could be made for less than $10.00.
