You know those boring, builder-grade bi-fold doors you have for your closet? Here is a quick tutorial on how to make them look custom and stand out!

This is what our closet looked like after a coat of paint. Originally I wanted to build shelves and have "pretty storage," but that didn't happen. The items we store here don't fit into cute little totes. Instead, I purchased a set of flat bi-fold doors and lattice strips to trim out the doors. Note- make sure to install the doors first to find out how much of the door will be covered by the trim in the closet door opening. There is roughly a half an inch on each side, so I framed out the rectangle shape with the lattice trim.

Once you have the outline of the molding nailed down, it's time to add the decorative detail. I knew I wanted an X-pattern on the door, but I didn't want it placed exactly center on the door. I placed my handles where I would want them, then used that placement to lay the lattice strips in an X-pattern. Draw in the cut line, then cut and nail your molding.

Fill in your nail holes with wood putty, sand, then paint the doors. I used Sherwin-Williams Dewmist Delight.

I installed some super-glam handles that I found at Hobby Lobby.  Viola! An easy closet door update for a little bit of effort! Now we can't see all of the junk hiding behind the doors!

That is a direct quote right at the beginning. Now what was your question about "are these bi-fold doors again?"

The clues being ...how to make them look custom and stand out ergo the positioning of the door knobs etc.

I love the way you added doors to your closet. They turned out clean and fresh and so pretty. Great modern office space. Love it!

Do these doors open out or still in bi fold mode..could they be hinged to be like regular doors?
