My husband inherited this steamer trunk from his great aunt about twenty years ago. While redoing our living room recently I thought about incorporating the steamer trunk, but it needed to be refreshed. Here's what I did to use it as a new coffee table!
Before
After receiving some hints from Hometalk, I went to work on restoring the metal using gold leaf Rub ‘n Buff. Thank you Hometalk!

Step 2: I combined vinegar and olive oil with some lemon drops to clean the sides and top of the trunk.

Step 3: I wanted to restore the top since it was the most damaged from years of neglect. I used Java Home Decor Chalk Paint with a topping of Antique Wax.

I decided to keep the worn leather handles as they are so the trunk keeps its aged look.

After
Now I have to finalize the Decor on top of the trunk. That remains a work in progress.
This photo is an ‘after’ with my attempt to include decorative additions to the top. It works perfectly and looks pretty cool, hope you like it!
