When this porch was built years ago, we were under a County Building Code of 7" between spindles. Since then, we have become a City and the Code is now 4". We decided this was the best way to close the gap to meet Code.

We added horizontal cedar fencing boards screwed into the 2x2 spindles to close up the gap. This also helps keep leaves off the porch and adds a little privacy.

Sorry, but I do not have a "before" photo. You can easily see the spacing of the spindles.

First we measured the height and configured how much space to put between each board and made a template to mark where to place boards. They were trimmed slightly to the required length and screwed in place. (The open space is the lookout post for our watchdog to view the land! I can be filled in later with scrap boards.)

Thanks Wendy...I actually got the idea from watching the folks on HGTV's "Flip or Flop" show putting up privacy fencing horizontally, and then following for so long the way the HomeTalk folks use different things in so many different ways...it just sort of popped into my head to do this! LOL

HomeTalk has a way of making one look at EVERYTHING in a different light! Free material, quick, easy and IT IS DONE!
