DIY Mid-Century Modern Coffee Table
New furniture can be so expensive, so we are always looking for ways to make fun pieces for our home, on a budget. Our contributor, Amy, from Her Tool Belt, shared this beautiful build with us. It's that fun mid-century look, in an easy-to-build plan. This piece can double as a coffee table or a bench and is easily customizable to your space.
Watch our quick video tutorial for instructions on building your coffee table/bench.
Head over to Remodelaholic.com and get the free building plan and cut list. Once you've chosen your wood, cut the pieces according to the cut list, remembering that you can customize this bench to width or length very easily.
Before assembly, sand all of the pieces well. Mark each 2x4 where first slat will lay. Glue, clamp, and nail slats in place, using a 1/2' spacer between slats. Check for square and to make sure ends line up properly. The video shows more detail for making this process smooth.
Once the tabletop is assembled, glue and nail slats to the sides. Flip the table over, and fill the nail holes with wood filler. Once that is dry, give the table top another good sanding. Install the angled leg brackets to underside.
Condition and stain your table and legs. Once dry, attach the legs. It's that simple!
We absolutely love how Amy's table turned out! Would you use this for a bench or table?

Beautiful table you have created. A piece that is versatile enough to be used inside the home or outside on a porch or patio. Great job.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Reading about the 1/2" spacer was an "Aha" moment for me but it's not mentioned in the list of Resources. Any hope of you adding a picture of it and how it's used?
This looks like it is long enough for 2 people if used as a bench. My question is if those thin legs will hold much weight.
