How to Grow Carrots Successfully

Sometimes growing carrots can prove challenging. There are two main things it takes to have success with carrots in your home garden. Read on to find out more.

Carrots are one of the most tricky things to grow in the vegetable garden. They can be difficult to get to germinate. Keeping them evenly moist during germination is the key to getting that coveted sprouts to come up out of the soil. My grandma used to put a board on hers and check every day until she saw the first sprout. Then she would take the board off and let them go at it.

The first thing you need to do to grow carrots is choose a kind of carrot to grow. They come in amazing beautiful varieties. Look at the qualities of the choices you have a chose the one you like. Next you need to prepare your soil. For carrots to grow straight and well, you need to have loose sandy soil. If you're soil is full of clay, you can mix in some peat and sand to lighten it up and make it ready for carrot growing.

Next, broadcast your carrot seeds evenly across the top of the soil. Carrot seeds are very small and don't need to be covered with much soil. They can be mixed with sand in a sugar shaker and sprinkled onto the top of the soil. Lightly run your hand along the ground to tickle some of the soil and mix it with the seeds and then lightly pat the soil no harder than you would rub your eye. Then keep the soil moist until you see sprouts.

Carrots take a few months to grow. You'll know they are ready when their shoulders peek up out of the top of the soil. Kids LOVE the magic of seeing what has been secretly going on under the soil in the garden. For more information about growing carrots and for where to get more seeds, click on the blog link below.
