Dollar Store DIY Burlap Pumpkin
Fall is all about decorating with texture and natural materials.
And pumpkins.
Here's the simplest tutorial to transform a pumpkin from the Dollar Store with burlap and ModgePodge.
Want to make your own?
Here's a simple step-by-step tutorial to show you how.
Step 1: Cut burlap into small pieces
Trim off any excess string.
I cut some squares and some rectangles.
On my fourth pumpkin I finally figured out that rectangles laid on the diagonal were the size of choice.
Step 2: Coat your pumpkin with Mod Podge
Start with a basic pumpkin. These came from the Dollar Store. The color doesn't really matter because you will be covering it all up with burlap.
Apply it directly from the bottle with a brush.
Make sure you get a good coat so the burlap will adhere. Glump that glue like no one's business.
I did not water down the Mod Podge.
Well….actually….I did water it down and it was a disaster.
Water + Mod Podge + dollar store pumpkin = hot mess
Step 3: Layer on the burlap
Start by tucking it in around the stem at the top.
Then base coat more Mod Podge and add another piece of burlap until your entire pumpkin is covered.
Smooth it out to make sure there aren’t any bubbles or random bits of string left clinging to the pumpkin.
Step 4: Coat the entire pumpkin with a top coat of Mod Podge
Hang out to dry.
Let dry for about four hours. I strung a string between two trees and clipped the pumpkins onto the string by the stems.
Step 5: Wrap stem in jute twine
Start at the top and hot glue twine to the stem.
Wrap until it completely covers the stem and secure at the base with hot glue.
Here's what the finished burlap pumpkin looks like. I created these fun fall tags to tie onto the top of the pumpkin. It was such a simple tutorial and only took about 30 minutes (not including drying time).
Happy fall decorating.
