How can I decorate this "blah" solid wood trunk? A beach cottage look is what I'm looking for. It sits at the foot of my bed.

Hello I might suggest chalk painting it with beachy colored paint tones.
I would suggest looking at this bloggers wonderful project gallery for inspiration.

What a great trunk. You can use chalk paint, but I would restain it. Minwax makes colored stains. Then I would mod podge beachy themes or get wallpaper and just do the top.
Paint it in a pretty coastal beachy blue and add some rope trim in a couple of areas. Beachy without being overdone or too cutesy! Wonderful storage for light blankets or most anything.
stencil it! put a cushion on it! lay a quilt across it!
Yes! I would definately stencil it with a starfish stencil! You could do it light blue and white! Here is a stencil!

Hi Margie, here's a lovely video that will give you some ideas on how to akeover your trunk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po-kMTNFMqo Have fun
Hello Margie,
I would use an external Fence paint in colour of choice - Paint it on, maybe a colour underneath and then white on top and then rubbed back to give that worn look.
I would make a slab cushion in a beachy fabric, piping the top and bottom edges. Use velcro to hold it in place. Enjoy your project!
Chalk paint is the first thing that comes to me. I love the beach theme.
Hi Margie Garcia-Hall
paint it with your favorite color.
here each one just show their likeness.
Hi Margie - That looks like the same trunk I've had for years! Chalk paint is the best for a beachy look. Hope this helps and good luck with your project. Hugs, Holly
A pretty grey/blue or white would look beautiful. You could sand it smooth and primer it. Then I would steel wool or lightly sand again before you add your paint coats to get that super smooth finish.
Since it looks like oak you may want to fill the grain. Use a product like this to fill the oak grain: https://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Coat-Cabinet-Filler-Environmentally/dp/B07HQY2PF6/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?crid=20Q1AHZZ9XLBN&keywords=aqua+coat+grain+filler+cabinet&qid=1556719316&s=gateway&sprefix=aqua+coat+g%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-1-fkmrnull
Check out this video on that.

Old Trunk Makeover to beach look
Remove hardware.
Scuff with fine steel wool.
Clean with denatured alcohol.
Prime.
Paint blue.
Paint white.
Distress the white so the blue peaks through.
Add nautical hardware, I'm thinking the kind that looks like ropes.
Painting that a blue-gray color would be ideal and it would go with your flooring as well!
Maybe do a big stencil on the top of a star fish and some sea shells that would look fabulous maybe some sand at the bottom
I would even off center the starfish to the corner running down the side and front.
sand it and do a light gray or pale blue wash on it so it has some beachy color but you can see the wood grain, and replace the handles with jute rope.
lightly sand and then use chalk paint!
Maybe you could get some checkered material and make a pillow top on it.
I would paint it white and stencil Beach letters or coral stencil, here is a post i did on stenciling a table, same concept.https://www.simplenaturedecorblog.com/how-to-stencil-a-large-medallion-on-your-table/
I want to thank my extended Hometalk family for all of the ideas. I really apprecite your input.
I agree with everyone. I just think I would change out the handles on the end for rope or boat cleats
I see nice off white with some brownish accents and some rope
