Gel Air Freshener DIY
You can purchase gel air fresheners at the store, or you can make your own at a fraction of the cost.
And for this gel air freshener you probably already have the ingredients in your kitchen!
Gel air fresheners make great housewarming gifts. They're also nice to give out as thank you gifts for baby or wedding showers. Or as a sweet gift to family, friends, and neighbors.
Let's get started!
- (2) 4-ounce mason jars
- 2 packets unflavored gelatin (found near baking supplies at the grocery store)
- Food coloring (optional)
- 2-3 teaspoons essential or fragrance oil - adjusted to your preference
- Fabric square
- Mixing bowl
- Measuring cup
- Spoon
Combine 1/2 cup hot water and the 2 packets of gelatin in a mixing bowl, stir until gelatin is completely dissolved. If you want, add food coloring until you get the color you want. Then add 1/2 cup cold water and stir until well combined.
Add 2-3 teaspoons of essential or fragrance oil. Adjust the amount of drops to your scent preference.
I used about 30 drops of Lemon Cupcake essential oil for my gel air freshener. (To see more about this oil and how I got it be sure to check out my blog post!)
Pour the liquid mixture into your jar(s) and sit in a cool place for about an hour or so, or until set.
While the gel air freshener is "setting", you can work on making the lid. I used muslin for mine so the scent can get through easily. Other options are frog lids, fabric, or scrapbook paper with holes punched in it.
Lay the lid on the fabric and trace around it with a pencil, then cut out the circle.
Attach the fabric to the inside of the ring using hot glue.
After adding the fabric to the ring, wrap the outside of it with jute string just to give it a more rustic look.
Attach the lid to the jar and place in your home wherever you wish!
Gel air fresheners made with lemongrass essential oil are perfect for sitting on outside tables to keep the bugs away!
There's no limit to the fragrances you can make.
For a gift idea: use lavender essential oil, tie a piece of dried lavender around the jar, wrap with clear cellophane and tie with a purple ribbon!
Have fun making your gel air freshener! I'd love to see yours!
