I recently bought Spectracide for weeds and grass. It killed everything I sprayed it on in 3 days. Too soon to see if anything grows back.
You will most likely have to pull it up and eliminate the roots in order to prevent it from coming back.

The only absolute way is to pull by hand making sure you have all the roots. As a small child I can remember my Dad on his knees for hours pulling it up. But we had a most beautiful yard!!
