A Nearly Invisible Magnetic Board
I am not a big fan of bulletin boards or message boards, unless they are tucked away and out of sight. However, in order to keep track of important papers, prescriptions, and family projects, it is necessary to create one consolidated space for these items.
Are you tired of piles of important papers being stacked on the kitchen counter? Can't find them when you need them? I needed a solution to this problem.
Our HVAC repair man was fixing our unit and I asked him if he would make me a piece of sheet metal approximately 24" wide x 46" tall. He agreed and provided with the edges rolled for safety at no cost. You can also find various sizes of sheet metal online or through your local hardware store.
The plan is to paint the sheet metal the same color as the wall where it will hang. Place a drop cloth down to protect your floor and put the sheet metal on something to raise it a few inches from the drop cloth.
I used a carpet end flat dolly on 3" casters.
Using Dunn Edwards Cochise SP2560 wall paint in eggshell finish, I hand painted one side of the sheet metal. Notice the small holes in each corner. These were added by our HVAC repairman for us to screw it to the wall.
After painting the entire side, let the paint dry according to manufacturer's directions. I did not paint the backside as this will be against the wall.
We decided to "hide" this magnetic board behind the kitchen door. When the door is open, the board is not visible. However, if anyone needs to access the board, it is available. Measure to get accurate placement of the board on the wall.
Since we live in a historical home and our walls are plaster, we elected to use Command Strips Picture Hanging Strips. These velcro strips were applied to each corner and in the center of the board on the back side.
The sheet metal is rather light so the velcro strips are a good option if you do not want to drill holes into your walls.
In this photo, you can barely see the magnetic board on the wall. I love the clean lines and the fact it blends in perfectly with the wall color.
You can add headers to organize your paperwork.
This board is barely visible and hidden behind the kitchen door. But it provides a welcomed organizational destination for all family members. To see more blog posts about our historical home, please click here.
