Hi, I'm Amber Oliver! I hope if you enjoy this project you'll also stop by my blog!

When my Nanna asked me to help her recover her dining room chairs I was ECSTATIC! She'd had the same table and chairs in her breakfast room my entire life - and turns out most of my mother's life too!! These chairs had been sat on and squished for over 40 years so there was pretty much NO cushion left! We not only made them more comfortable, we made them look SO MUCH better! And the best part? Nanna loved them!

Here's what the chairs looked like BEFORE!

Our first step was to remove the cushions from the base of the chair.

This goes much quicker if you use a drill!

Now it's time to sand! You can use a palm sander to get the larger areas but you'll need to use sandpaper and sand in the nooks and crannies by hand. After they were sanded, we gave them two coats of paint with the paint sprayer!

Now it's time to recover our chairs!

Cut the foam as close to the size of the seat as possible but we found it doesn't have to be perfect! Then cut your fabric so it's large enough to be stapled on the underside of the cushion and the seat.

Start by stapling in on each side in the middle. Pull taut each time before stapling!

After your sides are secure, fold in the corners. I stapled the corner in first, then neatly folded in each side.

Once your sides and corners are secure go around and add more staples to ensure your fabric doesn't move.

I also cut a piece of posterboard so the bottom of the chairs look a bit more finished!

Here's what the new chairs look like!

We painted the Table legs to match and completely updated this dining room set!

This lovely project came along just as I am about to start renovating two beat up Chippendale style chairs I found at a dumpster. Can you tell what thickness foam you used?

  • Weazie Weazie on Aug 16, 2020

What type of paint sprayer did you use?

I was wondering if the foam was also changed? I started working on my dining room chairs and then gave up Now there are very uncomfortable and really have to fix that problem.

These came out beautiful! Great job! I used the identical fabric to upholstering some dining chairs.
