Eco Carpet/rug Freshener
Super simple project today! Most of us, at some time, have needed to freshen up our carpets/mats/rugs. I do, often, because I have pets and kids. I used to regularly buy various treatments and powders for this but later learned how many chemicals and other nasties are in most of these. Plus- they're expensive when purchased regularly! This ultra easy tip is effective, cheap and healthy- both for you and the planet.
All you need for this project is some bicarbonate of soda and a sieve. Oh, and a vacuum cleaner for afterwards!
Simply sprinkle the bicarbonate of soda through a sieve until it lightly covers the required area. No need for excessive application. As a rough guide, I used approximately half of this box of bicarb to cover a rug 200x120cm. I like to add a fair amount because, well, my dog is getting old now and she does pong a bit!
As you can see here, there isn't an excessive amount of bicarb on the rug. You can see a few little patches with more on- this was simply in areas where I didn't shake the sieve well enough and more bicarb landed there- I haven't deliberately added more to some areas than others.
Leave the bicarb to work its deodorising magic for a minimum of 30 minutes. I tend to leave it for an hour if I can.
After this time, simply thoroughly vacuum the area to remove the bicarb (and the odours!)
As an aside, for a stronger resulting smell (as opposed to simply elimination of odours), you can add 5 drops of essential oil to the bicarb and thoroughly mix it in before sprinkling it through the sieve. 5 drops again is a rough guide and can vary depending on the size of the area you're treating and how strong you want the smell to be. Always take care with essential oils and follow any maximum recommended doses etc.
There you have it! An odour free, freshened rug for a fraction of the cost and chemicals of shop bought freshener products.

Is that the same as baking soda?
