You can use a drill with a large bit. Make a cluster of holes about the size of what you want the finished hole to be. Then use a chisel to remove the wood between the holes.
You will want to use a Forstner bit to drill larger holes. They are available at your local hardware/home improvement store.

A speedbor bit on an impact driver or drill would make this task really easy. If they're not huge holes that you want though you could just use a chisel and hammer.
Hello. My suggestion would be to use a battery operated drill. Depending upon the whole diameter you want to make you could either use drill bits or chisel.
Use a drill with the attachment used to cut out locks in doors.
Forstner and Hole saw bits are expensive and something you may not use in the future. Spade bits are cheaper and come in different sizes.

If you don't have a drill, which would be easiest, you can use an awl to start the hole and then carve it out as much as needed for the succulents. Sounds like you have a great idea! You can do it!
Use a hole saw drill bit and chisel out the centre
Hi Fabiola if you have a drill, you can use a large bit, but if you don't you can pick up a bit and brace, hand drill your holes , the bit and brace will be handy for other projects too! Hope this helps you out
Hello Fabiola,
Use a Hand or Electric Drill with the right size of Bit for the hole size you wish to make.
Sounds like a nice project!
Use a large drill bit!
Hi Fabiola, a wooden spade drill bit should do the trick. They come in different sizes too so should work for small cacti. If your cactus is a little big you may want to look at this tutorial where we turned a branch into a rustic mug planter and used normal wood drill bits to make the hole - https://acraftymix.com/blog/eco-friendly-branch-mug-planter/
I would think a drill would work fine.
I would use a drill with a drill bit the size you need the hole to be. Should be a fairly easy project!
a wood drill bit will make your holes and here is more ideas

Get a hole bit for your drill, they are 1" and up.
A hole bit with a drill.
A paddle bit in a power drill. If you don’t have a drill, you can borrow from a friend or rent in at your local home improvement store.
