Tree cookie?
I hope someone can help? I have this tree cookie at a children’s learning trail and due to our budget and time we put this tree cookie for the children to learn from. It has turned black even after coating it. Does anyone have any ideas how to restore it or where I might get a better one already preserved and at a good price? Thank you!

I would try sanding it and then sealing it with an outdoor sealer like marine varnish.

If you can't get it cleaned well enough to use, reach out to a tree service or wood yard in your area for a replacement. On the new one, after it has dried seal with a poly that is for wood floors. That should maintain all the characteristics for the children to study.

Hi there, I agree with the first comment. Sand it right back down to bare wood and you'll be right back to seeing a beautiful tree cookie! I'm wondering if an outdoor shellac might be what you're looking for to keep it looking just like that? An epoxy pour would probably work too!
As this is for a children's learning project I would reach out to local wood shops and lumber mills to ask for 'free' help. I'm sure someone will be able to quickly recondition it for you.
Hi I agree I would sand it down and seal it. You could also paint it.
I'd combine Robyn and Ann's responses -- find a local wood shop to see if they can run it through their planer, then you can sand and seal it back up. Do make sure it's an outdoor sealer.
Lots of good advice here. It may be difficult to run through a planer, I would go with a heavy duty sanding and them make sure you seal it with a sealer made for outdoors that also says it dries clear.
I would sand it and then just leave it as is or seal it with a clear coat - you could always ask tree cutters to give you more of these
You can try sanding it. The seal it with Helmsman Spar Urethane. If sanding doesn't get it all you can also bleach it with a 50/50 mix of bleach and water. Let it sit for a while then rinse
I would sand it down, then use wood bleach on it to lighten it back up. Then use an epoxy top coat to protect it.

You will need to sand off the surface and re seal with an exterior surface.
Here is another idea... You could put chalk paint on it and then it could be used as a chalkboard. I did this with a tree slice on my front porch (it is a covered porch, though). Although, if this is outside and uncovered, I am not sure how well this idea will work.
The 'cookie' has been placed where it has so that children can learn about how trees grow by examining the rings. Please re-read the sign next to piece.
Many children would otherwise never get the opportunity to see the inside of a tree trunk and to be able to touch it to count the rings.
Painting the surface with chalk paint so the piece can be used as a chalk board would discount the efforts of the adults who wanted the piece of trunk to be used as a hands-on science teaching resource.
Hi! I'm sure many curious hands have touched (and learned) from this! If sanding doesn't bring out the grain and natural color, I would guess another wood slice is available out there. I would seal it with a clear drying exterior sealer. Follow the directions on the label and use multiple coats. This will also help with wiping it down after it's been handled. Now, that I think about cleaning it, I wonder if cleaning chemicals may have also contributed to the darkening. Good luck and stay safe!
A good belt sander should clean it up and a few coats of clear Varathane
Hubby recently took an old 4x4 and turned it into some shelf art. It is amazing how good the wood under the wear can look. Just sand it down and seal very well and all should be good.
Than you
