Hi DIane, here is how one of my favorite bloggers did it. She use 1x8s and 1x6s to keep the weight down as much as possible: https://blog.jennasuedesign.com/2016/04/diy-barn-door-plans-tutorial/

Leave the arch and install the barn door track above the highest point of the arch. I think that would look awesome and far less expensive than hiring a contractor. Would be a square door that would cover the arch when closed.
Hello Diane,
You need to use a 2 inch hardwood such as Oak or Mahogany. Make sure the wood has been seasoned well before use.

Yes you can add one in the same way you would a regular door frame. You will need a long door to cover the hole.
Normally, you use a regular door with barn door trim and add sliding door hardware.
It should be at least 1.50"
We used regular doors to make an arched French door. Our doors have not warped. You could do the same. You'll need doors bigger than your opening and ones without glass. Here's the DIY, maybe it will give you some ideas for construction of your barn door. https://www.exquisitelyunremarkable.com/2017/04/how-to-make-an-arched-door.html

At least 1" thick wood
If you’re going to buy “sticks” of lumber and not “veneer” an existing door, then the wood needs to be fully kiln dried, which is almost impossible to find.
To keep it from bowing, checking or warping- when assembling, I would consider glueing and screwing it into a plywood frame- something that will hold the wood in place as it dries and it gets used.
The wood you use must be dry and acclimatized to your area. Perhaps contact a local wood worker for suggestions for type of wood to use. Good Luck
