I absolutely love having my home smelling like my favorite scents but I don’t like all of the harmful chemicals involved in the store-bought plug-in type versions. This easy-to-make reed diffuser only uses a few simple ingredients and has no bad chemicals. It also doesn’t require electricity like plug-ins do and is much safer to use than a candle as you can leave diffusers unattended.

Pretty bottle with a narrow neck - I found this one at a thrift store. Thrift stores are FANTASTIC for finding unique glassware!

Bamboo skewers

Water

Rubbing alcohol

Essential oil

Paint, if desired

First, paint your bottle, if desired. I’m using a leafing paint pen to add a little gold accent around the neck of the bottle.

Create a mixture of three parts water to one part rubbing alcohol. For example, my little bottle can hold one cup of liquid. So I’m mixing 3/4 cup of water with 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol to make the correct ratio.

Add several drops of essential oil.

Pour the mixture into the bottle.

Insert five bamboo skewers into the bottle.

Place the diffuser where you want it to reside and allow the reeds to soak. After a few days, pull them out and insert the other end into the bottle – this is called ‘flipping’. You can flip them every few days if desired to keep the scent strong. However, note that the more often you flip, the faster the liquid inside will dissipate into the air.

Replace the skewers every six months or anytime you change to a new essential oil scent in the bottle. This will keep the reeds dissipating smoothly.

And enjoy!

I'm a big fan of diffusers too! I always look for something new, any reviews of hotel collection customer service? I buy diffusers as they add a wonderful scent to my home and also help create a relaxing atmosphere. Plus, diffusers come in so many styles and scents, making them a fun and versatile addition to any space.
