DIY Painted Speckled Eggs
I’m decorating my home for Spring and I wanted add in some speckled eggs…but do you think I could find any anywhere??? Well, since I had to DIY some I guess you know what the answer was!!
I used to have some but I let my daycare kids use them in our play kitchen and you can probably imagine what they look like…I won't be displaying them in a pretty bowl!!
I found a bag of craft eggs on Amazon for this project. They actually looked so real!!
Now, how do you paint them… I knew a brush would be tedious and I wanted a smooth look. So I went with spray paint with a chalky finish (Rust•Oleum) in 3 different shades: gray, blue, and cream.
The eggs roll around from the pressure of the spray paint; putting the eggs in a box with sides kept them from going to far. It took 2 light coats of paint to get all the sides.
The paint looks shiny when it’s wet but does dry to a chalky matte look.
Now for how to get the speckled look. I used a toothbrush and a plastic paint knife. Any plastic knife or a wood craft popsicle stick will work.
FIrst I dipped the toothbrush into brown paint. Then I scraped the toothbrush over the plastic knife pulling the toothbrush towards me which sent the paint spatters away from me onto the eggs.
Decorating With Speckled Eggs
Once the paint was dry it was time for my favorite part…let’s decorate!! I'm going to make a Spring centerpiece for my kitchen hutch.
Starting with a white pedastal bowl, I filled the bottom with some packing wrap and added a small moss wreath.
Then I added the eggs.
Taking a piece of grapevine garland, I wrapped it around the edge of the bowl and secured it in a circle shape with floral wire to make a "nest"
To finish it up, I filled the edges and empty spots between the eggs with moss.
Now it looks like Spring!
