Hutch Transformation
See how I transformed this old outdated hutch into a beautiful new piece for my updated kitchen.
I found this little gem on Craigslist for $80, it's a solid wood piece but had seen better days. I knew I could make it like new again with a little elbow grease and creativity and it would perfectly complement our kitchen remodel, which is Parisian themed in shades of cream, white and gray. I started by thoroughly cleaning and prepping for paint.
I painted everything white except the backboard which I stained in Minwax Mahogany.
I wanted a dark stain for the backboard so the gold transfer would stand out, plus it was such a nice contrast to the white and matched my dining table which is dark wood with white chairs (I redid the chairs myself which I will post later). This transfer was trickier than the one for the drawers, as its precut vertically in 3 pieces and you have to match those up horizontally as well.
For the drawer transfer I was a little uncertain as to the placement, so I laid them out on the table in different patterns before I found the one I liked the best.
This layout is what I decided on. Once both transfers were completed, I covered them with Minwax Clear Polycrylic in Matte to seal the transfers. Next I had to figure out which color I wanted the hardware. I knew the original was too dark, but I couldn't decide between gold or blush.
I decided on blush but there are so many shades and some are too pink, like hot Barbie pink. I found this one called pink champagne mist by Rustoleum and I am obsessed with it. I painted several layers until I got the exact shade I desired. One of the handles was missing a piece so I purposely put that one on top of a big rose so it was less conspicuous.
Here's the final result. The total cost for the cabinet, paint, stain, polycrylic, transfers etc., was $150. I absolutely love it. Hope you do too!
