Vintage Desk Turned Into Little Boys Whimsical Dream Desk!

I bought my son a very beautiful solid vintage desk And chair off craigslist for $50. He wanted me to paint it because it has quite the water marks on the top and needed to either have it refinished or painted. He also decided that he wanted it black white and red, with checkerboard pattern. He basically was saying I want a racecar desk. I told him I would do my best and got to work.
I went to work cleaning and stripping all hardware. Then i painted the whole desk barn red. My son is a perfectionist so i did tape the drawers and such to make sure i had perfect lines. I painted the whole desk red first because i knew i was going to distress and rough it up a bit and i wanted the red to show up through the distressing. I let that dry and then started taping for the checkerboard pattern which took quite a bit of time and a lot of measuring. It was my first time doing a checkerboard pattern so I believe if I were to do it more it would get easier. Getting the lines straight and squares even took awhile.
Of course to add a little of my style, because I do not like anything perfect, I distressed lightly and waxed with a couple coats of clear. I also painted and distressed the drawer pulls in the same red color and coated them in a matte finish. The chair speaks for itself, it has a touch of every color used and turned out super cute!
All in all, my son is happy, so happy and that makes me happy! I call this the $1000.00 desk because it took some time to do bwas worth it in the end!
