Spring Bulb Planting Guide

Now that the frost has settled in and most of the annuals and perennials are dying back, it's time to plant your spring bulbs.
Generally, you can plant spring bulbs right up until the ground is frozen. But who wants to go outside when it's 35F and dig in the garden? Not me. So I like to get them in the ground before the end of October.
Start by digging a hole....duh! The general rule of thumb is to plant the bulbs twice as deep as they are in size. For example, these tulip bulbs were about 3" so I planted them 6" deep.
Sprinkle some good organic bone meal in the base of the hole - about 2 TBS in this case. Place the bulbs, root sides down, in a circle with one more in the middle. My blog has a spacing and depth guide to help you, so head over to check that out.
Fill the hole with soil. Stamp it down a bit. And water!!! This is crucial to get the bulbs starting to grow roots before the freeze of winter sets in.
It may not look like much now, but come spring this little garden will be filled with deep pink, light pink and white tulips. I can't wait.

I do not have to worry about going out in the garden in the 30s, but I am certainly looking forward to bulb planting. And am feeling a little neglectful since I don't think I have ever once given them a dose of bone meal.
