Remaking entertainment center into murphy bed frame??

I'm making this entertainment center into a murphy bed frame. I need to cut each bookshelf "in half" so to speak. What kind of tool would be best? I don't want to completely disassemble to lay flat to cut with a circular saw. I've heard that a Japanese saw might work. Any other suggestions? Thanks

Disassembly looks like the easiest method unless I am not understanding where you're trying to saw.

btw - that's a great idea for a base unit for a Murphy bed! I hope you post it here.

Yes, that was my understanding. I still feel disassembly to saw where needed will be the the easiest thing to do.

I don’t think this will be a good cut unless you take the units apart. Not sure how you would cut the drawer either.

I would not attempt to cut the units, it could ruin them, have you considered just moving them apart- or selling them, buying 2 night stands and build in a Murphy bed?

Hello. This sounds like a complicated complex job that an everyday DIYer may need expert woodworking tools and help with disassembling and rebuilding the cabinetry in a custom way. Hope you can find some sound advice here.

You can buy a murphy bed system that would fit right between the two cabinets and easily turn this into a murphy bed.

Japanese saw is for fine smooth cuts in small pieces of wood. Like dowels, furniture feet, molding. it would take forever to cut the bookcase and cumbersome. Circular would be the best with a a 40+ tooth blade for a smooth cut. Cutting it in place as it is you would be compromising the structure and it can fall apart. Taking it apart would help in getting the cuts right. Also you would know what you can use and what you don't need for the bed frame.

I fear that cutting the cabinets in half would compromise the strength of the cabinetry and may be disastrous in the long run. I would suggest talking with a known carpenter or furniture maker before putting a saw to this piece. Not knowing if you have limited space to accomplish this project, if possible, take the upper piece on top of the cabinet sections and and move the cabinets wider to house the Murphy bed frame. Good luck with your project!

I would use blue painters tape, lay the units down and cut them with a fine wood blade on a skill saw just above the top of the drawer.

    Reciprocating saw

Hi Dd: I'm thinking that the unit is held together by the back, so you might just be able to take the back off. Same with the top, there may be screws holding it on either from the inside of the cabinets or the top, unless it's just sitting up there. Whatever you do, I'd take those glass doors off so as not to break them and/or the glass. Slide it around and see about that back piece. I'm willing to bet that's what's holding those 2 pieces together:)

    Good luck

Hi, Japanese saw for the finer work, western for the heavier. Are you making it a single or larger?

I wouldn't cut them down, if you look at all the old ones in NYC they all had cabinetry on each side just like your entertainment center. I had one from the 1920s that had incredible inlay in the cabinets. Sure gives you lots of storage.

Hi, Remove central chest of drawers and replace with murphy bed frame. Make a suitable pull down door to fit to the underside of the bed. I would also add a headboard or a back to the unit too.
