How to Make a Light-Up 12-Foot Ghost for Halloween

Unleash the Halloween spirit and create an awe-inspiring 12-Foot Ghost that promises to be the talk of the town – so captivating it could almost be visible on Google Earth! Best of all, this hauntingly impressive decoration is unbelievably simple and comes at an almost free cost.


With a few basic materials and a touch of DIY magic, you can conjure up this towering ghostly figure that's bound to enchant all who lay eyes upon it.

  1. Scrap Lumber – 3 pieces
  2. Gauzy Net Ikea Drape Panels – 1 Pair
  3. White Garbage Bag filled with Newspaper
  4. Battery Fairy Lights – 1 strand


1. Make the armature of the ghost

Find 3 pieces of scrap wood: 2 at 10 feet long and 1 at 3 feet long. Perfect for a 12-Foot Ghost!

Connect the 2 longest pieces and nail. Add the cross piece.

2. Make the head of the ghost

Fill 1 white plastic garbage bag with newspaper. Fill it up so it’s firm.

3. Make the body of the ghost

Use the bag ties to secure the bag to the “neck” of the armature.

Gauzy Net Ikea drapes (cheap, cheap, cheap – long and flowy).

To create a flowy ghost body, thread twine through the channel of the panels – tie to make a ring.

4. Add lights

Now for the magic: add 1 set of battery fairy lights!

Drape lights over the head and allow them to dangle down to the “feet”. Secure lights to the head with clothespins.

5. Add the eyes and mouth

Drape the netting over everything, then hot glue the blackest black hollow eyes and mouth to the netting.

Secure the ghost outside and get ready for nightfall.
