DIY Cocktail Napkins
We all know that a good party starts with great drinks. Today I am sharing easy DIY cocktail napkins to give as a gift.
If you have followed me for a while, you might recognize these trees. I made a Christmas pillow last year with these trees and now I have made DIY cocktail napkins which I absolutely love.

My favorite kind of gift to give is one from the heart. One I have made with my hands with the recipient in mind. These DIY linen cocktail napkins are one of my favorite gifts to give.
The cocktail napkins make the cutest hostess gift or stocking stuffer. They are wonderful.
These DIY cocktail napkins are easy to make and easy to customize. If you can draw a triangle and a circle, you can make these! Add the free motion embroidery and you have an amazing gift to give!
If you have followed me for a while, you know that I have made a lot of free-motion embroidery pillow covers. I paint a shape, like a flower or Christmas tree, and then use the free motion presser foot to embroider over the paint and embellish the design. The result is quite extraordinary.
I am always brainstorming free-motion embroidery ideas and these cocktail napkins are the result of one of those brainstorms. I absolutely love them and can’t wait to give them as gifts. Perhaps, I might have to make some for myself too.
As you can see, painting the napkins does not require painting experience. It’s pretty simple and you do not need to paint a Christmas tree. Just paint shapes.
All of the detailing in the cocktail napkins is done with the free motion stitch embroidery. And the funny thing is, the stitching is also not perfect.
I hope you will trust me when I say that anyone can make these.

I usually gift a set of four cocktail napkins.
Cocktail Napkins (I like these 6×6″ linen cocktail napkins. You can buy 12 for under $20 for a very inexpensive gift!)
Acrylic craft paint (2 oz. bottles) two reds, two greens, and one brown (such as Folk Art Hunter green, Bright Green, Lipstick Red, Barnyard Red, and Real Brown) You need a red and a yellow-red. You also need a green and a yellow-green.
Paint brushes, 1/2 and 1″
One spool of Machine Embroidery Thread in Black or Brown
Sewing Machine
Darning (Free Motion Embroidery) Foot – Just make sure you confirm this fits your machine.
Washable Fabric Marker – Mark Be Gone or a light pencil
Once you have picked your design (and feel free to use this one), draw a very light outline with a washable fabric marker or light pencil.
As you can see, all I drew was on the napkin was the tree.
And my drawing was less than perfect.
- one – Once you have drawn your design, apply the paint. I like to show some light in my trees, so I painted green on the left side and a warmer yellow-green on the right side. Do not paint the area where you intend to paint another color, such as red paint. Just leave those areas blank.
- two – Paint the entire trees, including the yellow stars on top. Let dry.
- three – Place the darning foot on your sewing machine and stich the outline of the design. Stitch everywhere twice.
- four – Sttich the second tree and you re done!
The steps to make the other two Christmas drink coasters were exactly the same as above. All you need to do is iron the napkin to set the acrylic paint and you are done.
Also, if you don’t like to sew, you can use a permanent thin marker and achieve the same look without a sewing machine.
