I love this toddler felt Christmas tree craft and your tot will love it, too. The possibilities are endless as to what you can do with this tree and gives your kiddo the opportunity to decorate and redecorate to their heart’s content!

We used this in place of a tree while my first born was going through her inquisitive and mobile stage. We recently pulled it out again for the youngest who is just turning two.

Christmas trees are so engaging, but the breakable ornaments and the hooks used to hang them are kind of scary when your toddler puts everything in his mouth.

A Felt Christmas Tree, however, isn't scary at all, unless they figure out how to remove thumb tacks from the wall, in which case, you find other ways to attach the tree.
I started with about a yard of green felt, folded in half, making it taller than wide.

Then, I lay out paper on top of the felt, taping to make a single large sheet. Then, I sketched the outline of the tree branches, starting from the tip and working down toward the base.

Once the tree was the shape I wanted, I cut through the paper and both folds of felt to create symmetry in my tree.

It's important to use scissors dedicated to fabric crafts. Previously used scissors for paper crafts will most likely be too dull to cut through felt. (Ask me how I know this).
Next, I printed out shapes to use as ornaments ... and pinned them to the various colored felt sheets and cut out.

Sometimes I freehand cut shapes.
Finally, I pinned the tree to the wall and set out the ornaments and star for my toddler to decorate her own tree.

Later, I twisted two different colored chenille stems together and bent them into candy cane shapes. Generally these were hunt on the thumb tacks, though the tot figured out she could occasionally get them to stick to the felt tree just right.
Let the kiddos decorate to their hearts' content!
