Huge Bath Caddy for a Small Bathroom, No Woodwork

If you don’t have the wall space or the skils set for extra bathroom shelves, use the wasted space over the bath and make this easy extra-large bath caddy, no woodwork involved.

You would never say that a year ago, I was bragging about this beachy, holiday apartment bathroom. I installed a skirt around the basin to hide the pipes. But look at it now. It’s in shambles.

In all fairness, there is no storage space, not even that horrible dark cupboard behind the mirror that nobody ever uses because it is too gross. Instead, everybody’s products are balanced on the rim of the bath and everyone is quite happy to watch the whole lot come tumbling down like a set of dominoes.

Not me. Enter a piece of pine wood that fits over the width of the bath, conveniently pre-cut by the store to my specifications.

Sand it down.

Give it a coat or two of Gripseal.

Find a nice basket that is high enough to house all the shampoo bottles and other stuff, even should they fall over. It doesn’t matter if it is a bit wider than the wood, it’s still going to be a step up from the normal, tiny bath caddy.

Make sure the basket also gets a coat of sealant. And yes, it wil get wet and and frot eventually but that is the beauty of biodegradable materials, you can throw them away without feeling guilty.

Also get a bamboo bowl. I actually thought this one was pottery when I passed it in the store because it has an irregular potterylike shape. The bamboo is lightweight, hygienic and can stand up to moisture. I wouldn’t use porcelain because there could be an accident and the bath could end up chipped.

Cut three strips of velcro, two of which should fit under the basket lengthways with some room to spare. The third should fit under the bowl.

Stick the two long strips to the bottom of the basket and then stick the whole thing to the wood. I used a glue gun which meant that I had to work very fast for the last step.

Finally, stick the small bit of velcro to the base of the bowl and then the bowl to the wood. I used velcro because it’s easy to work with and it means that I can occasionally remove and wash the bowl or any of the parts if I need to.

You could also add some glue gun blobs to the bottom of the wood where it catches the bath to make it more slip proof.

And so we now have a huge bath caddy that can take everything from bottles to razors and soaps. It looks so simple but I think it is a lot more practical than meets the eye.

One little addition I would make would be to add a cleat of some kind on the underside of the board so that it doesn't slide off to the side dumping everything into the tub when in use...it should rest against the outer side of the tub underneath...maybe even a paint stick or a pencil? Just so it has something to keep it from slipping outward. I like this design, and maybe I can get one made for myself. Thank you for sharing it! Blessings!

have a similar situation, so several years ago, found a rustic beat up board that fit perfectly across the tub and couple more inches. {Left that part alone} Got a big wicker basket out of my stash and rolled up towels and wash cloths if and when guests, along with toilet tissue and lotion and bathsoap. When ready to shower just pick up the board...Taint heavy and place on wicker chair next to tub; workable arrangement. No fuss, no muss..MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL...A GOOD NIGHT!!🌲
