Put Together a Faux Cement Moss Bowl Centerpiece for Your Living Room
Recently I have seen these faux moss bowls popping up at home decor stores, but they cost a pretty penny. I knew that with just a few items and ten minutes of my time I could easily create my own. With the exception of the bowl, all of the items I used can be found at your local craft store. Follow my step-by-step tutorial as I show you how to put together a DIY faux cement moss bowl that will quickly become the perfect centerpiece for your coffee table.
Tools and Materials:
- Large bowl
- Spackling
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Butcher paper
- Hot glue
- Moss table runner
- Moss mix
- Artificial moss rocks
I didn’t love the look of the white bowl that I had so I decided to give it a little makeover. I wanted to create a cement look without all of the weight that comes with making something out of cement, so I went a little faux.
I mixed spackling with some dark grey paint to achieve the cement color. Make sure to mix it well.
Using a chip brush I painted the bottom of the bowl with the faux cement I had created. Make sure to get a good two coats on it and then let it dry for two hours.
I wanted to add a little dimension and texture to the bowl, so I mixed spackling with a smaller amount of the same grey paint to get a lighter color.
Then I roughly brushed along the bowl. I didn’t want to completely cover up the darker grey.
Next I rubbed over what I had just painted with a dry paper towel. This created the exact texture I was looking for!
Tip:
If you want to avoid a streaky look, go ahead and use a sponge brush.
I wanted to build up the bowl a bit instead of just filling it with moss, so I started by gluing some scrunched up butcher paper into the middle of the bowl. We’re going to cover this part in just a second so it doesn’t need to be perfect, but do make sure that it’s glued down well and secure.
Next I cut my moss sheet to match my bowl.
I added hot glue along the inner edge of my bowl and just pressed the moss into place. If you need to trim here and there make sure to do so. Don’t worry about things looking perfect, a little bumpiness here and there makes it look more natural.
With my base prepared I was ready to add some more moss features. I glued different colored pieces of moss along the top of the moss sheet. Make sure to layer different colors to add visual interest and texture.
There is no right or wrong to this project, it’s all according to your aesthetic and what you want to create for your space.
That’s it! In only two steps you have created a stunning centerpiece for your coffee table! This faux cement moss bowl adds so much to my rustic home decor! Now make one for yourself!
