Replace a Missing Button

Pair of shorts that I repaired also needed a replaced button. For this project I simply needed a needle, thread, a button, and a garment needing a button.
Missing a button.
First, choose a button.
1. Make sure your button fits the buttonhole.
2. There are many different types of buttons some buttons you have to sew from underneath the garment through one little hole. The button I chose has four holes. Also, you want to make sure that you're okay with the color of the button in relation to the garment or fabric.

3. Pick a color of thread, in this case I want my thread not to standout, so I chose the color of my thread to match the color of the shorts, (black).
4. I threaded my needle and knotted it.

5. Carefully from the back I bring my threaded needle up through one of the holes and bring it out through the front of the button and down one adjacent hole. It should look like a straight line from two buttonholes. I repeat with the same two holes several times.
6. I do the same thing with the next two holes. It should look like two matchsticks next to each other.
7. Now, I do the top part and the lower part turning the two straight lines or matchsticks into a box shape. In other words two more matchsticks; but this time you have to reuse a hole and connect it to an empty hole. Repeat this several times like you did for the first two matchstick lines.
This ensures that if a person is very active that the button won't come loose. You could go with just the two matchsticks but if you're very active that button could come loose and then you'd be applying just another button, so I went with the box.
I hope the photo below gives you an understanding of what I mean by the box shape.
