Simple DIY Feather Art

What do you do when you fall in love with something at a store and just can't justify the price? Sometimes, I just have to stop thinking about it and move on but in this case... I decided to try to make my own. I'm in love with the results of my feather art inspired by this amazing one! (aff. link) It's crazy how simple, cheap and fast you can make this project.
I love how the feather art plays with my kitchen shelving and tile. If you want to see how we mounted the kitchen shelving without brackets then you can check that post out here. The art added some interest to the shelving without being distracting to the whole look. I could definitely see this piece working in a gallery wall or bathroom though.
First things first... gather your supplies! Thrift store frames are perfect for this. You need one frame but two pieces of glass that are exactly the same size. I think 11x14 ended up being a perfect size (that's what I used) but you could go larger or smaller. I think if you went smaller, one larger (dramatic) feather might look really good. Or, if you went larger... multiple larger feathers would look good.
Decide how you want to transform your frame. Do you want to paint it? Leave it natural? Gold leaf it? The options are endless! I chose to gold leaf mine. I grabbed a small paint brush and just brushed it on.
Gather your feathers! You can buy these at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Amazon, etc., (or really cool ones on Etsy). Or be creative in finding them (like me - click over to my blog post to see how I found mine).
Sandwich your glass pieces over your feathers and place within the frame that you picked. My frame just barely accommodated both pieces of glass. If you need to ... add a little tack or small nail to hold the glass pieces in together.

Glad to see those are feathers. At first, I thought they were sardines. Wouldn't you need to use some kind of staples, brads, clips, glue or something to hold the glass pieces in, while revealing the wall color behind?

Unless you have chickens, better buy feathers. By law, only licensed Native Americans are allowed to collect songbird feathers.

according to the North American Migratory Bird Act, you can't possess eagles of course, but also not seagull feathers, songbird feathers, or crow feathers.
