I'm excited to walk you through the process of creating a stunning DIY fluted board and batten wall that will add a touch of elegance to your space. I recently tackled this project myself and wanted to share the steps with you. Let's dive in!

Tools and materials

  • Fluted boards (I used 1x6 boards from @weaberlumber)
  • Saw (for cutting boards to size)
  • Level
  • Jigsaw (for shape cutouts)
  • Wood filler
  • Caulk
  • Paint and paint sprayer (I used Graco TC Pro Paint Sprayer powered by DeWalt)
  • Baseboard
Cutting the boards

1. Measure and cut the fluted boards

Start by measuring the fluted boards. Mine were 1x6, and I picked them up from @weaberlumber. Cut the boards to your desired sizes using a saw. We decided on a longer section for the bottom and a shorter section above, with borders.

Adhering the boards to the wall

2. Adhere the boards to the wall

Using a level to ensure accuracy, adhere the cut fluted boards to the wall. This step helps establish the foundation for your accent wall and gives it that distinct fluted look.

Shaping the fluted cutouts

3. Shape cutouts

For any boards that require shape cutouts, such as those around outlets, use a jigsaw to carefully create the necessary openings. Take your time and make precise cuts to ensure a clean and polished outcome.

Applying wood filler

4. Apply wood filler

At the bottom edge of the fluted boards, where they meet the baseboard, apply wood filler. This helps create a seamless transition and gives the accent wall a professional finish.

Caulking the gaps

5. Caulk the gaps

Caulk the gaps between the fluted boards and the border boards. This step not only enhances the aesthetic but also ensures a tight and secure fit.

Painting the board and batten wall

6. Paint

While the natural look of the wood was beautiful, I opted to paint the accent wall to complement my dining room. I used a paint sprayer for efficiency and precision. I went with the Graco TC Pro Paint Sprayer powered by DeWalt. It was a breeze to use and saved me a ton of time. In about 15 minutes, the entire wall was beautifully coated.
