Painted Doormat
Have you ever purchased one of those heavy duty rubber doormats, they’re brightly colored and durable, but the vibrancy just does’t stand the test of time!? I’m here to make a suggestion, PAINT IT! I loved this doormat when I bought it, it was so fun and bright and made the tiny front entry so happy, until it faded to black. Then it just sat there, serving it’s purpose still but without any pizazz. I hate throwing out things that are still doing the job they’re intended to do, and this one in particular, how long does rubber sit in a landfill? Likely forever! So I painted it!
Hometalk Recommends!
Here it is when it was new, bright and playful! But after 1 season it faded out entirely to the back rubber base. To bring it back to life I used some simple Apple Barrel acrylic paints!
There’s some remnants of the past life on the upper corners, but mostly worn off!
I started by giving all the raised patterns a coat of white as a base.
Once the white dried I went in with gold for the “welcome”
Then I added in the greens, I would suggest starting from the top and working down though… or flip it. I got green paint all over my sleeve 🤦♀️🤷🏼♀️
to give the colors a gradient effect I used the same color in different shades and put them side by side and dipped my brush half in one and half in the other.
Add your colors to the mat, I’m obsessed already!
oh so satisfying progress! I completed this over the course of a few days.
Obsessed with how this turned out! I sealed it with a coat of polyurethane made for outdoors to preserve the color, I’m not sure how this will wear, but I’ll update at the end of summer!
What do you think? Do you have an old door mat begging for a refurbishing?

I had the same very disappointing thing happen to a heavy black rubber doormat I bought at Lowe's. The colors were beautiful....until someone actually walked on it. Colors began to wear off almost immediately, ending up in an ugly solid black mat I never would have bought had I known it wouldn't hold the color for even a few weeks. I'll be really interested to know how yours holds up with the ourdoor poly top coat on top of the craft paint. Thanks for sharing...you did a great job painting yours!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
did you put any type of top coat on it, how does it stand up to you wiping feet on it, do colors stay on okay?
I just noticed that judging by the dates of some of the comments, your original post is over two years old. Did you ever update it with a report on how long the paint held up?
