How to Remove Grass

Grass can be great, but there are certain times and places where you do not want grass. For example, below our hammock I wanted to add a pebble "beach" area. So, we had to remove the old grass. Read more about this project here!

Identify your area

Grass didn't grow well in the shade below the trees where we put our hammock. I decided to ditch the grass and go for pebbles instead.

Loosen the grass

Use a shovel or spade to loosen up a border around the area of grass that you want to remove. Dig the blade down a few inches, angling in towards the middle.

Remove the grass

Work in strips the width of your shovel. Use the blade to lift them up. Once they are separated from the ground, roll them up like sod.

You can then re-plant this grass in other ares of your yard - just water it really really well.

Till the soil

If you do not want to save the grass, you can simply till it up. It helps to have  an electric tiller or cultivator to do this effectively.

You can also till the ground after removing the grass to loosen it up, depending on what you want to put in place

Add pebbles or whatever you prefer

Add your pebbled, mulch, or whatever you prefer. I like to use newspaper as a cheap weed barrier. Enjoy!

Enjoy the aftermath

Here is what this corner of our yard looked like after. We removed the grass, laid newspaper, and laid pebbles.
