Top of countertop, the kitchen is fairly small.
How can we change the countertop?
We bought an older home, the kitchen countertop is hideous. I would like to change it . I am on a fixed income and cannot afford to have it replaced. The grout in between the tile is awe full. Any suggestions?

If money is a factor I would just paint the grout. A nice white would make the entire area look fresh and new.

Hi Linda, likely the least expensive solution is to regrout the tile in a color matching the tile which appears to be white. There are also resurfacing kits availale at the home improvement stores that are not too expensive. Check with the store associate for advice about self-leveling solutions as it appears your tile is not a smooth surface. You might be able to locate a handyman who is proficient in applying the resurfacing products.
There is a product called Grout Refresh made by Mapei. You can get it on Amazon or in Home Depot or Floor and Decor. Comes in several colors so you can change the grout. Or you can buy The Rustoleum or Giani countertop makeover kits. Also a good epoxy paint will cover your tiles. You do have choices.
I would probably take out the tiles, and go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a nice laminate counter top. Some Lowes will even cut it for you. Check them out, it may be less expensive than the painting kits.
I agree! Just painting the grout after a good cleaning would look good. Painting the tile and grout would change the look. The pattern in the existing tile may transfer to peel and stick tile or give an uneven surface
If you want to get rid of the grout, epoxy over it. Other option is to paint the grout and then seal it.
Since money is a factor and the tiles are wavy with dark grout, an inexpensive option would be to color the grout a color you like and then seal it.
Another option is to put laminate over it with a board under the laminate which would level out the texture of the tiles, but this would be much more expensive.

Yes not sure which project I will try, but I am definitely going to try one of these great ideas. Very interesting!
Hope you find the perfect solution
Paint the grout or replace it with coloured grout.
You could paint the tile or the grout
There are lots of ideas here on countertops: Home and Garden DIY Ideas | Hometalk
You can buy paint pens that are easy to use to cover the grout and make it look new:)
It looks like the tile is textured? Not sure the sheets of tile would work there, but you could easily paint the tile and clean and maybe repaint the tile grout. That would update the look quite a bit.

You can remove the existing grout with a grout removal tool. They can be had for less than $20. Here’s just one from Amazon.

After it’s been removed pick out a grout that you like. I’d recommend ‘pre-mixed so there’s no hassle with the mess, or having to figure out if the grout is the proper consistency. You’ll need to get a ‘grout float’ (also very inexpensive) to apply the grout. There’s tons of videos on YouTube to walk you through how to do the job.
clean well and apply stain resisten varnish
If you like the look of concrete counters, you can use a skim coat concrete. You essentially smear it on over nice and smooth then seal it up. Very inexpensive to do.
