How to Build a DIY Covered Patio

Learn how to build an amazing covered roof for your patio to provide a little shade and rain protection in your backyard. A full tutorial can be found at Kenarry: Ideas for the Home.
There are numerous ways to cover a patio: umbrellas, awnings, trellises, or pitched roof structures. After carefully considering costs and benefits, the one that best fit the family’s needs was a modified trellis that not only created shade, but also a dry space.
One of the considerations for this project was the type of wood to use. After comparing the cost and aesthetics of cedar vs fir, cost over ruled looks and at a third less fir was the more viable choice.
After creating the structure for the DIY Covered Patio, corrugated Tuff-Tex was attached to the lattice roof to provide rain protection.
Hooks are mounted underneath so flower baskets can hang down the sides of the structure. A drip irrigation system was very easy to install and works wonderfully to keep the plants hydrated.
Once the DIY Covered Patio is finished, it's the perfect place to enjoy an evening by the fire.

We did this and it is fabulous. We didn’t attach to the roof we attached to the brick wall under the eave. We love our covered deck. So grateful for the inspiration.
