DIY Hot Tub Cover
We moved our hot tub under a sun shelter in the summer and didn’t realize the lid wouldn’t be able to open with the sun shelter roof. Cue the panic!!!
After searching out options, the cheapest roll up option was a few thousand and wasn’t in the budget. So we decided to make one!!
I knew we needed a closed cell foam that wouldn’t absorb water. I found these foam floor mats sized 4’x8’. I bought two of these for the base.
I went with 1x3x8 slats for the top. Since our hot tub is covered and won’t get wet I went with untreated wood. This may be something I change out in the future.
After laying bath mats out, we spread out the wood. For 8’x8’ we used 24 slats and eyeballed the gaps in between.
We added no more nails to tack the boards to the foam. This didn’t work as planned and actually didn’t stick at all, but it marked the foam enough so that we could line the wood up when we flipped it over.
We then flipped it over and placed a level along the edge. We then began screwing.
We used brass screws to avoid rusting and neoprene washers.
To join the two pieces of foam we cut up a yoga mat.
We then screwed this in place and sealed the sides with flex seal.
It rolled up perfectly.
It was a little steamy last night to catch a picture but the cover works so well and we’ve been so happy with it so far! The water drops bead on the foam which is exactly what we wanted and the water has remained clear.

Mark, they are yoga mats, you can get them at Walmart or any big box store.

Nice idea for warmer climates. Sadly not enough insulation for my wintry weather.
