Have you seen the Drip Technique storm across the Furniture Up-cycling community? It is increasingly becoming more popular amongst Furniture Artists! Drip Painting is a form of abstract art in which paint is dripped or poured onto the surface. Plus it is very fun and easy to do, follow along as we tell you how Aj's Vintage Designs did this Technique to her dresser with Dixie Belle Paint and Products!
We recommend starting your project by cleaning it with White Lightning as directed on the label! This will rid your piece of dirt, dust, grease, and grim!
White Lightning is a very important step to prepping your surface prior to painting with Dixie Belle Paint. Cleaning your piece is important for Dixie Belle to adhere to! Aj assessed her surface and fixed up any chips or dents with Dixie Mud, this is used to fill veneer, gouges, scrapes or even holes!
After cleaning your piece you are ready to start painting! Aj started painting her piece with the Dixie Belle color Caviar on the bottom half! Assess your piece and consider what layer you want to drip on top of the other, or if you want your drips to fall onto the natural surface.
As Aj worked her way to the top of the piece she then started using the Color Cotton to blend the black in with the white, creating a beautifully blended gray in between!
There are several ways you can approach the drip technique.

You can thin your paint with water prior to painting or you can work alongside with a water bottle or mister. Diluting the paint with water will change the consistency of the paint!

If you mix water in with your paint you will paint on top of the white area with the watery paint and allow the drips to start forming naturally with the help of gravity. Make sure to position your piece in the direction you want your drips to fall. As you can see Aj also added some drips to the top of her piece as well by laying it face down.
If you choose to work with a spray bottle, you will want to spray a layer of water on top of the wet paint before it dries, to allow the wet paint to mix with the water and drip down onto the black. You can also consider using squeeze bottles and create your drips more precisely.
The more layers the better!
Dixie Belle Paint is the Easy Peasy Paint at a Sweet Southern Price! Dixie Belle dries within 15-30 minutes. We recommend sealing your piece with one of our Clear Coats, or Gator Hide for a more durable water-repellent surface. After 7-10 days your piece will be dry and you can use a non-abrasive cleaner on your surface. Remember that your piece will take 21-30 days to fully cure so be careful for the first month!
We hope to inspire you to create a hand-painted piece of furniture with this Drip Technique! How many colors you use is up to you! Experiment with other household items to create unique textures like; rolling pins, corn cobs, marbles, cookie cutters, metal rods, knives, rollers, and cards. Happy Painting!
