Dumpster Drive By to French Tea Room in an Afternoon

6 Hours
As people begin moving out of apartments at the end of the month, when the weather is too hot or cold or there's just not enough room in the truck for one more piece of furniture, many leave perfectly good pieces of furniture by the apartment dumpster. We drive by and if it appears to be something we can repurpose or upcycle, then we put it in the truck and bring it home.
We found this table 6 blks away. A scuffed and nicked shade of muddy brown paint sitting next to a dumpster. It is solid wood. Stripping and refinishing was not in our time frame so we set it aside for another day after scrubbing off sticky syrup, jelly, cheese and other cruddy bits.
A few months later, we found this chair and while it is mostly metal, I made my husband take his pocket knife and rip the material and padding off right at the dumpster - I think cat may have used it as its littler box for a long period of time. That's why you only see the wood part of the seat.
After scrubbing it up we set it aside until the rain stopped. This morning my husband lightly sanded the table and wooden slats on the chair, sprayed it all down with primer and then painted in a color complimentary - it took 1 can of primer and 1 can of paint. Cost was $12. We had the padding and the material I picked up at a yard sale for another project so this was just leftovers.
I think it turned out gorgeous. Perfect for an afternoon cup of tea. Don't you just love the French blue striped fabric? I do. It will make a lovely addition to a senior when moving from the family home and into an apartment - but for right now, it's going to sit in our dining room so we can admire our handiwork a bit!
