My grandma and grandpa had a record player sitting in their dining room with decorations on it that were removed every weekend so me at 5 years old was able to sing and dance through the hallways every weekend then grandpa passed away and Grandma moved closer to family and the music box went in the basement and stayed there for 14 years I had my own family and was storing Furniture in the basement looked over in a dark corner and seen the music box I slowly walked over and removed the cobwebs slowly open the lid and there was no music! I ran upstairs ask Grandma if I could have her record player she replied what record player sweetie I said really fast the record player in the living room at the old house she said well that probably doesn't even work anymore honey why do you want that I said to put my TV is on it so as time went on my 22 year old when he was five I would take the TV off open the lid and put a record on and he would dance and sing through the hallways they came out with flat screens thank God for the music box haha and my four year old who has a disability, I remove the flat screen once in a while and allow him with a gleam in his eye to dance and sing to Disco Duck and run through the hallways. Our music box has been in the family for four decades and I love it because it matches every piece of furniture that I have ever had, why change now? Well because I discovered unicorn spit from a lady that invented it named Michelle who made it for special needs children and adults, it is non-toxic and has Jasmine essential oils and is perfect for our family now so we dove in immediately!
I started by getting out some colors of unicorn spit and thinking of the country storms at Grandma and Grandpa's old house there was nothing better than the stormy sky and the smell of country rain so I definitely wanted to use Blue Thunder Tia Teal white ning and black midnight to bring back the wonderful memories of long lost happiness.
I put on some old records I got from a dear friend and use that for some inspiration to start sanding I wanted to leave some natural wood to keep the historic peace alive I know I definitely wanted some blue streaks.

After I sanded it down I tried different colors and it was the blue Thunder mixture that I chose I sanded with a hand-held sander, sanding light in some spots and very hard in other spots this must have been a fine piece back in its day, covered with coats of wax and varnish.
I used the aura technique that Michelle taught my son and I when we met her at an antique show in Clarksville Missouri. I moved the glaze left to right each color as my hands moved with the grain the music box ooo'd and aah,d with every movement.
I used a roller to see how that would work I did not like it so I had nothing to wipe it on and I just wiped it on the protruding parts of the wood of the music box. .. I looked at it... blue gray...and loved it! It kept the rustic look so I rolled the blue grey mixture using the black midnight, Blue Thunder, and white ning mixture to make a blue gray rolling all of the protruding wood. I sanded the indentions really well in order to put a light stain with ordinary stain I picked up at the hardware store. Now it was time for the Unicorn spit to Dry. ...I used a fan because I could not wait!
I sanded lightly and then sanded harder in areas to make sure I had the blue streaks I wanted to remind me of the country sky during the thunderstorms at Grandma's. My next step was to put polyurethane coat. I did not have tung oil at this time, but I wanted this to be perfect so I went and bought some tung oil and after three coats of poly and one coat of tung oil I let dry overnight.
This turned out exactly how I imagined it even better actually. I had some shimmer dust in my cake decorating kit that I added to the white ning and I painted the beautiful woodwork next to the gold knobs to give her a little something special in front. I took the tarnish off the gold to keep The Rustic look. I let it dry and then took my final pictures of my finished product all the while an american star hung in the background and I thought to myself I will celebrate independence day coming up soon and this piece will no longer hold a television. It will go in front of the window decorated with American theme all year round for her new beginning now my little one can open the lid whenever he wants with a gleam in his eye and run through the hallways and sing and dance with Grandpa and his heart and the music box screaming for joy and freedom for the years she waited to come alive again and for generations to come God Bless America!
