While going through my junk pile, I found a rectangle wood frame from an old canvas. I actually have a few for some reason. I scrounged around until I found a plank the same length, and started an extremely simple craft.
The frame was at one time covered with canvas. So the wood is raw. And a little too light for my tastes. So I put a couple of coats of very watered down Burnt Umber acrylic paint. I buy it by the quart!
The plank had a sheen to it, so I gave it 2 coats of the same paint, but not watered down.
Next, I gave both the frame and the plank 2 coats of white chalk paint, letting the first coat dry completely before adding the second.
When the paint was completely dry, I sanded it down, giving attention to the edges, and glued the plank to the back side of the frame. I put a vintage handle on each end with E6000 glue.
I think it looks great with my make shift shelf that I painted the same way. And it fits perfectly!
