Build a Pine Dining Table
This is my knockoff version of a dining table I saw for $400 (ZAR 6000) and made for $60 (ZAR 1000). I used PAR pine from my local hardware store and had a pair of steel legs custom-made. The table was then painted to ensure the pine didn't yellow.
My biscuit joiner was used to laminate the pine planks for the top. You could also use dowels or a pocket-hole jig to join the planks together - its up to you.
A cross-piece was secured underneath the tabletop to span the width at both ends. A few people commented that this was not a good idea but this table was made in 2016 and I am still using it today - plus it still looks as good as the day it was made!
I had a friend weld the two legs to support the table and these also span the width and support the weight of the tabletop.
The leg supports fit over the cross-piece at both ends of the tabletop.
The bar spanning the length of the table supports the table and also the leg frames and is secured through the legs using screws.
A coat of whitewash was applied to the sanded tabletop to prevent the pine from yellowing and this was given two coats of clear polyurethane varnish.
The finished dining table.
