Elizabeth Wilkins and her partner, Tom Schwartz, faced a devastating natural disaster when a glacial dam outburst flood hit near Juneau, Alaska, causing significant property damage. The couple's rented home collapsed into the Mendenhall River, captured by a drone recording and shared online. Amid the catastrophic loss, their young cat, Leo, went missing during the disaster. Despite the couple's home being labeled a complete loss, they clung to hope that Leo's resilient personality would lead him back to them.
Three days after the flood, Wilkins and Schwartz returned to search for Leo, and the community rallied behind them after hearing the heartbreaking story. After 26 days of searching, Wilkins found a photo of Leo on the Juneau Community Collective Facebook page. Recognizing her "COVID kitten," she met with the person who posted the photo, Tonya Mead, and was joyously reunited with Leo. Despite being a bit thinner, Leo was in good health and quickly resumed his usual activities. The couple, now coping with the aftermath of the disaster, has lost possessions, but the return of Leo brings them comfort. Leo is currently staying with a friend while the family seeks a new place to live, looking forward to rebuilding their lives as a happy and loving family. The community, still recovering from the unprecedented flood, is navigating the emotional aftermath and rebuilding efforts.
