New Bed Completed

I think like most men, I have to compromise when it comes to the bed, and accept that I only get the edge if I am lucky!! :) Since coming to Colombia we have had a 1.4m wide bed, it was time to try and get some extra space, unfortunately our bedroom will not accommodate a 2m bed, so we decided on a 1.8m wide by 1.9m long bed.
I had always said I would make our ´Forever bed', so it was time to step up to the challenge.
The first step was to buy the mattress, because you build the bed to the mattress, not buy the mattress for the bed!
Having bought the mattress, it was time to buy the timber for the bed, ideally I would love to have made it from hardwood, but try as I might, I was struggling to find any dry wood. Mahogany is plentiful here, but wet, used for construction, I might use it for small furniture but not something as big as a bed.

Eventually I found a hardwood supplier, but they explained that dry hardwood, is imported to Colombia, and therefore ridiculously expensive, I could buy laminated oak or teak boards. 3m x 1.2m x 2.5cm, but I have never worked on big projects with this, and I was not happy to start, so I ended up buying pine, and then I had to go to three different Suppliers to get what I wanted.
The Building process then began, I worked off plans, but changed and adapted them to our needs, I used an Oak stain on all parts.
Today was the culmination of two and a half weeks work, I had told SWMBO that it would take three weeks, so I came in under target.
the final part was doing the electrics for the lights, which I built into the headboard.
And then it was finished. I am really pleased with the finished bed, the only reservation I have is the height, another inch, I would have needed a stepladder. SWMBO insisted that it be high enough for one of our dogs to continue sleeping under the bed, because I used 2x4s on their side for the supports, we gained some height!

The whole build process from start (22nd Oct) to finish can be seen on my Blog.
